Gall Bladder
The gall bladder is a hollow organ designed to hold liquid. The bile that was produced in the liver is sent to be stored in the gall bladder. Bile is stored here between meals when it is not being used. When fat-containing chyme enters the duodenum stimulations cause the bile to be sent into the duodenum. The bile is transported through the common bile ducts, (A bile duct is any of a number of long tube-like structures that carry bile,) which link together the gall bladder and liver.
- When bile salts crystalize in the gall bladder it can cause gall-stones.
- Bile used to be called gull, hence the name gull bladder as it is a storage unit for bile.
